Hi I'm Rachel--a chocoholic and Manhattanite baking up a storm in my tiny apartment kitchen.  My focus is mainly on sweets, though since a girl can't live on chocolate chip cookies alone (believe me I've tried) savory recipes show up here from time to time as well.

My favorite things to bake are celebration cakes like
this one, this one and this one. I also love making muffins, caramel corn and ice cream, but my desert island dessert recipe would be these cookies. Hands down.  No contest. Game over.
If I have to eat something that's not filled with sugar, I'm partial to goat cheese, avocado, Mexican food, and sweet potato. (Ever since the Dan Quayle spelling bee debacle of 1993, I've been terrified of misspelling potato. I can't be the only one, right?)  Truth be told, my non-dessert diet is generally pretty healthy and I actually like fruits and vegetables. I don't eat much meat, but I do love a good cheeseburger every now and then, and I'd rather eat a thousand ears of baby corn (one of my least favorite foods ever) than live in a world without hot dogs.  I'd choose red over white, sparkling over still, and chocolate over vanilla (unless swirl is an option, in which case, sold.)

I do get out of the kitchen from time to time, so I also share photos from my travels and from around New York City, where I have lived for the past ten years.  Some of my favorite NYC desserts and baked goods are the chocolate chip cookie at Levain Bakery, the oat current scone at Bathazar, the olive oil gelato at Otto, the banana pudding at Magnolia Bakery, the cinnamon challah knots at Amy's, and the crack pie at Momofuku Milk Bar.

I take all of the pictures for this blog with a Canon Rebel and a 50 mm lens, a zoom lens, or a macro lens. I've had my camera for almost two years and haven't dropped it yet which I consider to be quite the accomplishment.
Some other important things to know about me are that I have awful/awesome taste in TV (think teen dramas that air on the CW), I love crossword puzzles (nerd alert), and I once showed up at The French Laundry in short shorts
