I'm not much of a fashion risk taker, but I know a good trend when I see one. Which isn't to say I jump on the sartorial bandwagon right away--it took me a good three years to embrace skinny jeans, and I'm just coming around to the idea of booties now. I'll get there eventually, but probably not until the cool kids have moved on to something new (clearly I have no future as a fashion blogger). But when we're talking about a food trend, I'm game for almost anything. So when both my friend Colleen and Tracy from Shutterbean made chocolate covered pretzels in the same week, it took me all of about twenty minutes to follow suit.
This isn't much of a recipe--you simply dip pretzel rods in melted chocolate and then coat them with colored sprinkles, chopped candy, or mini-chips in a contrasting color. Still, the resulting pretzels are festive, fun, and, for those feeling the post-Christmas cookie fatigue, don't require that you turn on the oven or dirty more than one dish. They're just the thing to munch on while you cozy up watching movies this week, and I think they'd be a hit at a New Year's Eve party as well.
Mark my words, chocolate covered pretzels are going to be a major trend for 2012. And I should know--I'm wearing jeggings as I write this.
1 bag pretzel rods
1 bag milk chocolate chips (or semi-sweet or white--whichever you prefer)
sprinkles, chopped candy, mini m&ms, mini chocolate chips, etc
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Melt the chocolate using a double boiler or the microwave. Dip pretzel rods in melted chocolate, and then in sprinkles or candy. Place finished pretzels on parchment-lined cookie sheet and put them in the refrigerator to harden.
