{twd} swedish visiting cake

I'm not usually a fan of plain cakes. Well, that's not entirely accurate. If we're being honest here, I'm a fan of all cakes. It's just that if I'm going to have cake I want to have cake. Towering layers, fanciful flavor combinations, and icing galore. Plain cakes just seem too, well, plain in comparison.

But this Swedish visiting cake somehow manages to be simple and yet totally delicious at the same time. I replaced the lemon zest called for the in original recipe with blood orange zest, and added a pinch of cardamom. The results were fantastic. Forget bringing it to visitors--I want to keep this cake all to myself. It may be simple, but there is nothing plain about it.

Blood orange and cardamom? Be still my heart! Your cake is so pretty. I agree that it manages that tricky combination simple and impressive - with a huge dose of easy thrown in, too. Thanks for baking along with me this week.

Can you believe I've never tried cardamom? I've really gotta get my act together. Beautiful cake!
