pistachio petit-four cake

Some cakes are everyday cakes. The kind of cake that you can nibble on for breakfast, serve to friends who just happen to drop by, or enjoy with a cup of tea and a good book. This is not one of those cakes. Which is not to say that it's not delicious because it most certainly is. We're talking about layers made from toasted pistachios, rounds of homemade marzipan and bittersweet chocolate ganache after all. But there is nothing everyday about it.

No this is decidedly a celebration cake. The type of cake that's destined for candles and wishes and singing. The type of cake that's meant to take center stage. Which is exactly what it did when I brought it to my friend's birthday party last weekend. There was just one little catch.

When the waiter began slicing the cake, he was cutting huge pieces. Pieces that were larger than the dessert plates. Pieces that even a chocoholic like myself could recognize as being a little over the top. But when I asked him to make the slices a bit smaller, he responded by cutting them all in half. Crosswise. So my painstakingly prepared three layer cake ended up on the table in one and a half layer slices. Needless to say, I was less than thrilled, but in the end it didn't matter. Because even hacked in half, this cake was still fit for a celebration.

this sounds amazing! quite possibly the best sounding thing you have blogged about -- do you think it would hold up if you fedex-ed me one?? pistachio and chocolate are my favorites (and marzipan is a nice bonus).
