vietnamese coffee ice cream

I'm not writing about this Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream because it's delicious or because I'm still obsessed with my new ice cream maker or even because it's currently a bagillion degrees in Manhattan and the kind of day when a girl just needs some ice cream.

No, the real reason that I'm writing about this Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream is because by the time you read this, I will be on my way to Vietnam! I will be travelling through Southeast Asia for the next five weeks, but will return at the end of September armed with lots of exotic food stories!

Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream
From The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz

1.5 cups sweetened condensed milk
1.5 cups very strong coffee
1/2 cup half and half
big pinch of freshly ground coffee

Whisk all ingredients together and chill thoroughly. Then process in your ice cream maker , freeze and enjoy! I stirred in about a half of a cup of dark chocolate chunks when my ice cream was done churning.

salmon in lemon brodetto with pea puree

Some recipes need a long introduction. Whether it's because I've discovered a new ingredient that I want to share, averted a near kitchen disaster, or need to convince my intrepid readers to try something new, some recipes have a back story that becomes almost more important than the food itself.

This is not one of those recipes. Because all I really need to say about is this:
This is the best fish that I have ever cooked at home.

The lemon brodetto is light and tangy, the pea puree bright and sweet, and the salmon rich and buttery. Together, they create a restaurant worthy dish that made me gasp out loud the first time I tasted it. Had I not been absolutely exhausted from a long day of studying, I would have jumped down off of my bar stool and done a little dance around the kitchen. I made it again last week for a dinner party of five, and everyone agreed that it was stunningly good. So in the interest of letting the food speak for itself, all I'm going to say is make this dish. Soon. You won't be disappointed.

{twd} classic banana bundt cake

"We have an important decision to make," I said to my friend Colleen, opening Baking From My Home to Yours to this week's Tuesdays with Dorie selection. "We could either add chocolate chips to the banana cake and have it for dessert, or leave them out and have it for breakfast." Colleen's reply? "Why can't we do both?" And that, dear readers, is why Colleen and I are such good friends. Chocolate for breakfast? Why not indeed! Well, as it turns out, there was one reason--we were out of chocolate chips. But no matter, because this cake was amazing just as it is. And, if you must know, we ate it for both dessert and for breakfast.

Thanks to the Food Librarian (one of my favorites--check her out!) for this week's pick!
